Terayon's CherryPicker Digital Video System Deployed by Telegeneve, Leading Swiss Cable Television Operator
Telegeneve Delivers Programming in 10 Languages with CherryPicker
GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 29, 1999--Telegeneve, a leading Swiss cable television operator serving more than 132,000 subscribers in Geneva, has deployed the CherryPicker(TM) digital video management system from Terayon Communication Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:TERN - news).

CherryPicker enables Telegeneve to deliver programming in 10 languages to better serve its subscribers in Geneva, a city in which as many as 40 percent of residents speak languages other than Switzerland's primary languages of French, German and Italian.

At its central headend in Geneva, Telegeneve receives English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish language programming, primarily via satellite broadcast. Telegeneve then uses CherryPicker to provide a customized program line-up in each language, consisting of the most popular channels. Telegeneve currently distributes more than 130 digital programs and 65 radio programs over 16 transport streams, 14 of which are managed using CherryPicker.

In addition to its customizable ''grooming'' function, CherryPicker's unique statistical re-multiplexing technology allows Telegeneve to maximize its available bandwidth to deliver the greatest number of channels with the highest picture quality.

''The CherryPicker lets us pick and play with incoming video streams to offer our customers the best program line-ups. We have also gained the ability to output more programs per stream without upgrading our entire system,'' said Paul Edmond Delay, vice director for Telegeneve. ''We can now provide more customized program packages to suit our audience demographics with the CherryPicker.''

''We are pleased that a leading cable operator such as Telegeneve in the growing European broadband market, has selected CherryPicker to be the heart of its world-class digital video headend. The multi-lingual programming challenge makes this one of the most advanced CherryPicker deployments to date,'' said Zaki Rakib, CEO of Terayon.

CherryPicker's ability to ''groom'' custom channel line-ups using content from multiple sources is particularly important in countries such as Switzerland, in which multiple languages are spoken. For instance, an operator can use CherryPicker to assemble a channel line-up composed entirely of German language programming for a city in which German is the dominant language.

Telegeneve joins Adelphia, Cablecom, Chambers, Charter, Cogeco, Cox, Suburban, Time Warner and Videotron as cable operators that have successfully deployed the CherryPicker. Terayon acquired Imedia Corp., the developer of CherryPicker, in September 1999 to complement its proven cable modem systems with the industry's leading digital video management system.

Terayon's CherryPicker digital video statistical re-multiplexer enables cable, terrestrial and satellite operators to unbundle compressed program streams from satellite and other sources to create a new customized multiplex while maintaining picture quality. With CherryPicker, operators can deliver customized programming, while closely managing video-on-demand services, local programming/ad insertion, Internet and program data insertion.

System features include static grooming and transcoding of digital programming, dynamic grooming, local program/ad insertion and data injection. CherryPicker is completely interoperable with products from other leading headend equipment manufacturers.
