Beautiful Duke: But after they admitted same they were executed them in some other manner. It was just a gimmick to vindicate the false accuser in the guise of providing a more merciful death. I don't think Gate's will opt for either which makes your parable so poignant. JFD

They could ONLY be burned if they ADMITTED to being a witch. If they were accused and did not admit to being a witch they were tortured until they did admit. More: There were three stages or degrees of torture. The third was the worst and often resulted in death. This final stage gave birth to the term of "giving someone the third degree." And there was the belief that because the witches were still thought to have power, for protection, no one was to look them in the eyes during torture or burning. It was far easier to do inhuman acts to others if you didn't have to look into their faces. (Thanks to the recent History Channel series on witches). This sounds just like the government now... admit and burn, or they will torture MSFT to death.
