COM DEVELOPMENT INTERNATIONAL LTD - California-based Software Developer Lober & Walsh Joins COM DEV

Story Filed: Monday, November 22, 1999 2:43 PM EST

Toronto, Ontario, Nov. 22, 1999 (Market News Publishing via COMTEX) -- COM DEV International Ltd. announced the acquisition of San Luis Obispo, California-based Lober & Walsh Engineering, Inc. The small company of just over ten employees will form the nucleus of the new wireless software and digital hardware, product development arm of COM DEV's Wireless Group.

"This acquisition expands COM DEV's product reach into internet related products. Building on our success in cellular infrastructure products, we expect to be performing field trials of Wireless Internet Infrastructure products in late November and December," said Peter Scovell, President of COM DEV's Wireless Group. "Subsequent developments in 2000 include high speed wireless internet user terminals, which will allow users to connect a PC via its Ethernet port and establish a wireless internet link to infrastructure equipment".

COM DEV's acquisition of the engineering firm will enable the group to expand their reach further into the worldwide digital wireless communications market. "Our new digital wireless systems will fill a niche with products that exist nowhere else in the market," said Joshua Lober, founder of Lober &Walsh.

As part of the Lober & Walsh acquisition, Lober is appointed Vice President, COM DEV Wireless Group, Digital and Software Systems. The company will move from its downtown San Luis Obispo office to an expanded facility, which is destined to become COM DEV's centre of excellence for digital hardware and software development. Its close proximity to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) ensures a steady source of highly skilled engineering graduates.

Mr. Lober is an engineering and computer science graduate from Cal Poly. He founded Lober & Walsh eight years ago designing and manufacturing equipment for GTE Airfone, and numerous RF power amplifier equipment developers. As a result of a communications industry boom, Lober eventually changed his focus to cellular technology and in 1994 entered into a partnership with Bill Walsh. Since their partnership, Lober & Walsh Engineering's products have been deployed throughout North and South America, Asia and Africa.

Canadian-based COM DEV International is the largest Canadian-owned designer, manufacturer and distributor of space and ground-based wireless products and subsystems through its two divisions: the Space Group and the Wireless Group. COM DEV employs more than 1,100 people in facilities in Ontario, New Brunswick, the United States, the United Kingdom and China.

The Wireless Group manufactures ground-based infrastructure subsystems used in microwave and radio frequency systems, such as GSM and CDMA-based digital telephone systems, and wireless local loop networks. These products are sold primarily to major PCS wireless equipment vendors. The Space Group manufactures advanced products that are sold to the major satellite prime contractors for use in earth science and commercial communications satellites.

This news release may contain certain forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties. Actual results may differ materially from results indicated in any forward-looking statements. The company cautions that, among other things, in view of the rapid changes in the wireless communications markets and technologies, and other risks including the cost and market acceptance of the company's new products, the level of individual customer procurements and competitive product offerings and pricing, and general economic circumstances, the company's business prospects may be materially different from forward-looking statements made by the company.
