Sam,

SFAM has been one of the threads I have followed for a long time. They are relatively cheap and have been so since last October '98. The merger with IPEC considerably lowered the quality of the balance sheet. Initially, I was correctly concerned about their ability to compete with AMAT. They seem to have largely failed. Then, I was intrigued by the idea of NVLS buying them to compete with AMAT and provide a second source for CMP. The apparent success of LRCX's Teres tool and the "relationship" between NVLS and LRCX makes me believe that it and followons will fill the role of second source to AMAT. Consequently, I have not and will not buy SFAM until clear signs of being able to compete emerge. If you need to buy "cheap", look at SVGI and UTEK, my two dogs and largest holdings in terms of number of shares.
