Study Shows Nortel Leading Mkt Share In Optical Networks
By MARK HEINZL

TORONTO -- Nortel Networks Corp. (NT) furthered its leading position in optical networking market share this year, according to a new study to be released Thursday.

According to RHK Inc., a South San Francisco telecommunications research firm, Nortel increased its leading market share for North America's $10.8 billion market for products used in optical networking, which uses fiber optic lines to transmit data and voice communications.

In the $7.7 billion SONET, or Synchronous Optical Network, category, devices that transport electronic signals over optical networks, Nortel's 41% market share in 1999 is followed by 27% for Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) and 21% for Fujitsu Ltd. (J.FUT). That compares with Nortel's 34% share, Lucent's 28% share and Fujitsu's 22% share in 1998, when the overall SONET market was worth $4.5 billion, according to RHK.

In the $3.1 billion DWDM, or dense wavelength division multiplexing, category, technology that increases data throughput by using multiple wavelengths on a single strand of fiber, Nortel's 37% market share is followed by 29% for Lucent and 14% for Ciena Corp. (CIEN). In 1998, Nortel's share was 29%, Lucent's was 28%, and Ciena's was 20%, according to RHK. The overall DWDM market was up from $1.9 billion in 1998.

Much of Nortel's growth is coming from upstart telecommunications carriers such as Qwest Communications International Inc. (QWST) and Level 3 Communications Inc. (LVLT), said Mat Steinberg, an analyst at RHK. The broad market for SONET and DWDM technology is surging as data traffic grows "by leaps and bounds" compared with voice traffic, he added.

Nortel officials have noted in recent weeks that the company's optical business is underpinning the company's earnings and sales growth.

Nortel, Brampton, Ont., is a communications-networking company.

Lucent, Murray Hill, N.J., Ciena, Linthicum, Md. and Fusitsu, Japan, are technology companies.
