Michael,

Why??? Well it's good software and SUNW is behind it
for starters. It's free w/Linux 6.0. Companies that
use it will probably be interested in having it
supported, something SUNW can and will do. EZ upgrades
via the web, also free. I'm assuming (but don't know)
that there won't be file-format incompatibilities w/
those in Office.

Sun has released Solaris to the public, mainly under
the "fair-use" doctrine in the copyright law. They
normally sell the O/S with the hardware so I don't
really know what an unbundled price for it would be.

The price of Sun's systems are based on their perceived
usefulness to the customer. Market dictates price.

Michael "Doh" -

"..Sun Solaris is way overprice.."

Sun Solaris is free for an unlimited user license with any Sun Server purchase. Sun servers are priced very competitevely and usually cheaper than its competition from HP, IBM, Compaq, etc - so how can the OS be Overpriced?

"..force Sun to release Solaris code to the public "

Solaris is already open source - have a date when NT will be?"

".. I think Judge
Jackson should break-up Sun"

do you have any clue about the legal process, monopoly laws, and the history of the Microsoft lawsuits which resulted in Judge Jacksons decision?
