Frontline Report from downtown Athens Here I am sitting in an Internet cafe a block away in the heart of central Athens. Outside, no cars and taxis, just a few motorbikes once in a while and some people walking around and cops and riot police in every corner. I have never seen this place so dead before. All the roads leading into here are blocked off by the police to protect Clinton. Where I am sitting right now last night was pretty much a short version of hell. The Communist party arranged a demonstration yesterday and they were blocked off from reaching the US embassy. They refused to disperse (they were charging "this is not democracy"...the communists were saying that, kind of ironic) and the 100 anarchists (who always demonstrate) who infiltrated the march started raising hell. The riot police responded and for tree hours we had: 16 injured, one seriously, 60 bank and shops front windows destroyed, several shops and cars burned, etc...On and on. The TV was broadcasting Clinton's visit live and had the screen split showing the violence. NOw I must say, the vast majority of the people just stayed home. Reaching the central Athens with the roads blocked was impossible and most did not bother. But of course the anarchists and communists always loved going against the "imperialists". These asshole anarchists with masks have turned Athens in a battle zone for years and people are just sick of them. They are a bunch of drug addicts with no jobs whose only dream in life is to buy a motorbike. One scene was showing a cop beating one of them and a pedestrian older man was cheering him "beat the prick, don't be gentle". As I thought, my timing arriving at the airport was most unfortunate. I arrived an hour before Clinton landed. No taxis and buses were working to drive me to my hotel in central Athens. I was stuck at the aiport until furhter notice. I saw Air Force One land. That plane is HUGE. Security was unbelievable. Cops everywhere. After 5 hours in the airport watching Clinton's visit and the riots on TV a nice guy working at a travel agency volunteered to drive me and a Chinese tourist (he bought a tour package from him) to our hotels in central Athens. Thank God for this guy, he was a former taxi driver. It took us two hours to get close to the hotels after taking numerous turns into the most obscure places of Athens. The Chinese guy got an unbelievable tour of Athens for free! Clinton went to a dinner in the Presidential house. He had to shake the hands of 163 people, that would really suck!. Our President was pretty strong in his words: "All Greece wants is for Turkey to respect international law and stop being aggressive. For years we have made numerous steps to initiate talks because we would love to have normal relations with our neighbor". Prick Clinton said that he would do everything in his power to solve the Cyprus problems and normalize relations between the two nations. This is the person who promised to solve the Cyprus problems "my presidency would not be complete if this problems is not solved" now with a year left he promises to do everything in his power....yeah right we heard that one before. All in all I agree with the Greek govt stance for security. This is the only Greek govt that gets it and is genuinely doing good things for the Greek people...No wonder the economy is turning around and the Greek stock market rise makes the Dow look like nothing. For the first time I also see homeless people sleeping in cardboards in corners....I had flashbacks of Detroit...I guess the power of capitalism is here to stay...ironic <g>. Do not mistake the dislike of the Greek people for Clinton. They would never ever forgive him for bombing the Serbs and taking the side of the Albanians. But they sure treated him very well here as well they should for the sake of national interests. Got to the hotel about 11. The crowds had been dispersed by then, the burned cars cleared away, the store owners cleaning up...the riot police resting by drinking coffee and having a cig. I heard people telling them why are you guys so nice, beat the crap of these long haired assholes. MOre people around this morning but still virtually no cars yet. signing off till later from my hometown.
