Is there really gold in Fort Knox?

This question is raised from time to time on SI, Kitco and elsewhere, but I've seen scant information on the subject. A cursory internet search turned up little:

The Treasury is pretty specific on the domestic gold it says it holds, and where it holds it
fms.treas.gov
fms.treas.gov

However, the issue apparently was long discussed by politicians unhappy at not being able to precipitate a formal, open audit, and was taken up by the conspiracy theorists
etext.org
long before gold 'leasing' by CBs gave recent, additional cause for concern.

Fort Knox is actually a military establishment

and the Treasury's gold vault is close by
147.238.100.101
ltadd.org
news2.thls.bbc.co.uk

Apparently the last formal, open audit of the gold there was a long time ago. Does it all belong to the US? Some older accounts don't distinguish - see under Gold Nuggets in
jckgroup.com
but it appears that, aside from gold in various mints, most of the domestically owned gold controlled by the Treasury is in the Fort Knox vault, and mainly foreign-owned gold (in the gold custody account) is stored in the vault beneath the Federal Reserve Bank of New York
mpls.frb.org

The obvious questions include: Is there a detailed listing available of the current and past contents of the gold custody account, similar to the listing of domestic gold cited above? To whom is the FRB NY accountable for a full, concurrent audit of this foreign gold? When did Congress last call for an audit of domestic gold, and what was the stated response for not carrying out a formal, arms length, open audit satisfactory to the American citizenry? Are there legal limitations on how, when and where and for what purpose the domestic gold can be used while officially 'held'?

I'm just floundering around here, but it certainly seems there are more questions than answers and I don't think I've even framed the questions adequately.
