Methadone is a powerful narcotic, but it has the great disadvantage (imo) of having a long half-life. It is very slow off; that is why a dose will hold a junkie for a day. Paradoxically this makes it the most addictive of any of the narcotics - the brain has so much extra time to decide "I don't want this to stop".
I prefer shorter-acting strong narcotics - morphine, Dilaudid, Numorphan. The ones I can't tolerate are the mixed agonists/antagonists - pentazocine (Talwin), butorphanol (Stadol), buprenorphine (Nubain). They do bad schtuff to my squeaking squealing synapses.

<edit> This is my post Twelve Thousand - I dedicate it to the Darians - cavorting like a family of otters through a swaying kelp of words.

<<Yes, the methadone they give drug addicts. If you get it for pain control, they give it to you in a pill, and you can have the pill bottle with you. If you get it for addiction, by federal law you have to get it from a clinic, one day's dose at a time. >>

I think they can get a weekly dose. Reason being there are 3 methadone addicts in Champaign and the approved clinic is in Decatur. We the people have to pay, by law, for a taxi to ferry these people the 100 mile round trip to get their drugs. It came to light when one of the riders decided he didn't like riding with the other two and sued for a separate taxi. And the court agreed that he shouldn't have to ride with the other addicts. So we the people get to pay for two taxi rides a week, or did, it could be daily now.
