NetStock! by Steve Harmon 1999.11.19 The Net30Index Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 01:04:35 -0800 From: Steve Harmon <steve@e-harmon.com> e-harmon.com's NetStocks! by Steve Harmon ceo of e-harmon.com ___________________________ 1999.11.19 Blue Chip, The Net30Index ____________________________ Since 1994 I've created several Internet stock indices and nurtured them to fruition. Each of them was based on companies I would add or delete from the index on a regular basis based on my analysis of the market leaders and potential market leaders. Performance index. As a fan of doing something not only new but that addresses a market need we debut e-harmon.com's Net30Index. Rather than base it on slecting stocks subjectively each quarter as I have done in past lives I wanted to have an index that everyday investors and institutional investors could grab onto. The Net30Index provides a way to gauge how the top Internet companies fare on Wall Street. How so? Sales matters. Out of a universe of 500 Internet stocks of all shapes and flavors our goal was to cut through some of the hype and offer an index that represented the sector objectively. Math works. The Net30Index takes the top 30 Internet companies determined by sales each quarter and reflects those stocks. The companies with the top 30 in sales which derive 51% or greater revenue from the Internet or because of the Internet comprise the Net30Index. Rather than a person picking stocks that should be in the index (which I have done for years now) Net30Index is the marketplace determining the winners based on sales. That cuts out concept plays, IPO one-shot wonders, phone-it in dot.coms. Sales is the first line of defense in the market since the top 30 probably can move through market mood swings, mad cow disease, Greenspan cameos, Al Gore, and just about anything else tossed at the Net. Yes, even in a bear market for Internet stocks the Net30Index will reflect the swing but these companies tend to have cash and other means to ride out the storm. Another benefit in the small market cap space is the top 30 tend to have larger market cap than the other 470 Internet stocks. Larger floats also occur more often here, meaning less volatility or day-trading cowboy roping. For 4th quarter 1999 the Net30Index consists of: _____________________________ e-harmon.com's NET30INDEX _____________________________ Company/ Ticker _____________________________ 1 CISCO SYSTEMS INC CSCO 2 AMERICA ONLINE INC AOL 3 AMAZON COM INC AMZN 4 PSINET INC PSIX 5 NETWORKS ASSOCIATES INC NETA 6 E TRADE GROUP INC EGRP 7 YAHOO INC YHOO 8 PRICELINE COM INC PCLN 9 USWEB CORP/CKS USWB 10 BROADCOM CORP BRCM 11 AT HOME CORP ATHM 12 ONSALE INC ONSL 13 EARTHLINK NETWORK INC NEW ELNK 14 AMERITRADE HOLDING CORP AMTD 15 MINDSPRING ENTERPRISES INC MSPG 16 CHECKFREE HOLDINGS CORP CKFR 17 VERIO INC VRIO 18 EXODUS COMMUNICATIONS INC EXDS 19 IXL ENTERPRISES IIXL 20 NETWORK SOLUTIONS INC NSOL 21 EBAY INC EBAY 22 CHECK POINT SOFTWARE CHKP 23 RSA SECURITY RSAS 24 BARNESANDNOBLE.COM BNBN 25 PRODIGY COMMUNICATIONS CORP PRGY 26 DLJDIRECT DIR 27 LYCOS INC LCOS 28 DOUBLECLICK INC DCLK 29 CMGI INC CMGI 30 INFOSEEK CORP DE SEEK As you can see, many of the companies are well known and occupy the top slot in their sub-sector. In 1994 when I did my first Internet-related index an index like Net30Index couldn't have been done since there were a handful of stocks in the Internet. Not 30! and certainly not the diversity. Net30Index includes a nice mix of the different tyoes of Internet companies: access, hardware, software, ecommerce, content. So as the Internet stock universe gets more corwded the better stocks that make the way to being on the elite top 30 will be in Net30Index. While it removes some of the huge IPO runs we've seen lately it also removes the risk of pure momentum and unproven concepts from being called 'Net blue chips.' Net30Index is just that, the blue chip index of the Internet. Made to give investors a steady guide of the market leaders. ************** share this with a friend or colleague! sign up FREE ate-harmon.com Disclaimer: e-harmon.com does not make specific trading recommendations orgive individualized market advice.
