The Progressive Era was a period of federal activism during the Teddy Roosevelt and Taft administrations (roughly, 1901-1914). During this period, Standard Oil was broken up, most of the original labor laws and construction standards were enacted, the income tax was put in place, and the Federal Reserve was established. Whether or not it was good depends on your political perspective, but since I tend to be a libertarian, I'd say the expansion of federal power did more harm than good.

But, there was a popular mandate for the federal activism, mainly as a result of the excesses of the 1890s.
