How Net Appliances Will Make WebTV Obsolete

Jim Louderback, Editorial Director
ZDTV

The WebTV model of browsing the Internet on a television set is dumb. When I watch TV, I like to sit back and absorb the images. The remote control is the only device I need. When I surf the Web, I want to peer in closely, to read and click.
That?s what makes the wireless Webpad so great. Soon we?ll be able to buy wireless LCD panels with enough computing horsepower to surf the Web in style. With a base station hooked up to DSL or cable, that Webpad will let us surf wherever we are at home.

Imagine watching TV, with the Web in your lap. Keep a buddy list going, and comment on whether everyone really does love Raymond. Buy that cool new gadget you just saw advertised online. Chat during Monday Night Football about how lame the Patriots looked.

This year?s Comdex had a bumper crop of Webpads, which should start shipping early next year. Here?s a list of my favorites:

Samsung Izzi: The 8? screen is small, but at least it?s VGA. The form factor is pretty decent, and the wireless networking runs at 1 megabit per second. Should ship before July for $300 to $700 based on the service.

Global Converging Technologies Cendis 2000: Here?s an interesting idea: Combine a wireless Webtop with a 900 MHz phone base, and use the network for both phones and Web browsing. At 320x240, the screen?s too small, and 900 MHz only gives about 100 kpbs -- not nearly fast enough for DSL or cable. But for $400 you?ll get a base station with integrated Ethernet, phone and Webpad. It?ll be available in the first quarter.

RSC Webpad: An interesting design featuring a 10.2? screen from a Swedish company. Alas, they weren?t interested in having us show the world their product on ZDTV, so I didn?t get much hands-on time. Due out sometime next year.
