J.T., don't you know that crude oil prices don't matter in the new era? inflation is after all measured "ex food and energy" since no-one needs to heat his house, drive or eat anymore.
btw, the changes the BLS has wrought on the CPI this year have lowered the core rate by about 30% every month...i'll bet you as soon as the creep-up in inflation begins to show next year (when the CPI will compare apples to apples again) they'll tinker with it again.
astoundingly the shelter component of the CPI showed the biggest downdraft in years. this is in contrast to anecdotal evidence of sharply rising rents across the country. it goes to show to what extent the official numbers are indeed cooked. my guess is that the bond market just doesn't believe them anymore anyway.
