Zuma, I played with the DFR-300 a little bit, sliding the reader in and out of the PCMCIA card several times, but I didn't get rough with it. I'm unable to determine how rugged it is but think that a reasonably careful user will have no problems with it. As for touchpads, I don't think it would be appropriate for touchpads. However, I see no reason why the reader couldn't be incorporated into the "click" button of your laptop similar to the way of incorporating it into a mouse. I'm not a technical person so take my judgements with a grain of salt. Rick
