I have personally met and conversed at length with a gay ambassador. He was not "in the closet," and was appointed by Bush Senior as Ambassador to a country in which I lived for the five years I was in the foreign service. I met him when I visited the Embassy on a return to that country, and we have a number of mutual friends. He was universally considered an excellent ambassador to this country which might be termed "homophobic" culturally. But like all people, including Belgians, Africans will tend to judge others as individuals whom they like or don't, trust or don't, when they meet them personally. Because of that five years of my life, I have known many ambassadors, and one (former) ambassador is one of our closest friends. I do not speak from ignorance.
