Actually it could have the opposite effect. If Y2K is a non-event, the US economy will continue to barrel ahead and inflation will be an even larger problem. One of the reasons the Fed only raised 1/4 was due to Y2K liquidity concerns. I love how you talk as if things are a certainty. Who the hell knows?

Ken,

<<I would think, should the y2k be a complete fizzle, a lot of gold will begin hitting the market by the end of January leaving the gold market in total dissaray.>>

IMO this is a myth. I do not believe that much gold has been bought due to Y2K - but I suspect that mind set will be foisted onto some that do otherwise own gold .. "get rid of it while you still can" ... but that will just be more of the same manipulation that has been going on.

Personally, I believe that England had to borrow the gold they now intend to sell .... this is a sham.

<<(a)The consensus, life will go on January 1st. There will be some shut downs, but the lights, telephone, tv, radio, food and energy supply, and the banks will be working with no disruption. I would think, should the y2k be a complete fizzle, (b)a lot of gold will begin hitting the market by the end of January leaving the gold market in total dissaray.(c)The gold market is beginning to display a pretty bleak specter reminiscent of most of the past two years. >>

OK, I broke this down into 3 ideas so we can get at each alone.
(a)(1) Yes, life will go on January 1, but will it be "life as normal" Evereywhere on earth? I suspect there will be some rather nasty problems somewhere on earth. Where I don't have a clue, but the flows of money into dollars & into our equity markets indicate there will be problems - somewhere. How deeply these problems cross the borders into the US, Canada, & Mexico, may bend & distort any understanding of what is really going on. Do you REALLY believe Mexico is Y2k ready? I don't! Massive quantities of auto parts & sub assys. move from Mexico into these northern economies. Piles of electronics more into this land from than one.
(a)(2)Then there are the "bad guys" inside & outside these borders intent on doing some sort of evil anytime they have the slightest edge. Who will these nasty MF's be, where will they hit, & will they be intent on destruction or theft? I don't know, & neither do most others people or groups, including our military & law enforcement. It is these evil nasty MF's, and any possible over reaction by our elected officials, that I fear!
(a)(3)at some point after Y2k fixes those funds which are currently in the US $ & our equity & bond markets as a safe haven WILL GO HOME!
(b) most people that have bought or sold gold did so with: not only Y2k in sight, also with the beauty and duribility and with the knowledge that trade in gold (just like real estate or stocks & bonds) costs SOMETHING to accomplish.
In some cases if one will end up the net loser on the buy + the sell in the gold trade, people will simply hold. There is seldom any leverage or margin call in holding gold coins.
(c) When maybe only 1/2 of that Y2k gold comes back to the market, and the current stock market crashes (from money going "home")will gold stay near where it is at currently or lose maybe 85% like some of the current overpriced stocks? When those companies outside the US but traded inside the US have Y2k problems, will there be an impact? As companies & individuals use up Y2k stores of inventory in 1st quarter will there also be a demand disruption?

Lots of questions & maybe's tacked into your "sure thing for two years". If gold moves down 1% as some equities drop 85% will gold stay down 1%?

TO ALL,

In vexatious times such as we now have when so many folks are troubled in body, mind and spirit, it might be somewhat uplifting to read both the original and the modern spoofed-up versions of Desiderata (and fittingly so on a weekend)!

DESIDERATA

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.

But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

MODERN VERSION OF DESIDERATA

Go placidly amid the noise and hassle, and remember what chances there may be for skiving.

As far as possible without paying be on credit terms with all traders.

Speak your truth loudly and clearly but listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they may be your boss.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are trying to sell you something.

If you compare your wage packet with others you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be higher and lower wages than yours.

Enjoy your tea-breaks as well as your lunch.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; with the dole queues the length they are, you'd better.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to the chance of pulling a fast one yourself.

Many persons strike for high pay, and everywhere the dole queues are full of those who failed.

Be yourself; eff everyone else.

Especially, do not feign affection, unless of course there's money in doing so.

Neither be cynical about love; for in our high-tech Internet-driven society, there are much more profitable things to be cynical about.

In the face of all aridity and disenchantment, you're better off smoking grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, and book that facelift as early as possible; after all, you can hardly be much earlier than Michael Jackson.

Nurture a large bank balance to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings; reality is grim enough.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness, but most are born of getting up in the morning.

Beyond a wholesome skepticism, be ruthless with others: You are a child of the universe, no less than anyone else; you have a right to be here: but do they?

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt someone, somewhere is planning to grab what you've got.

Therefore be on guard against your enemies, whoever you conceive them to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep earplugs handy.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, this world never was much cop. Be careful.

Strive to be happy.
