I like the quote stamp idea as well.

One possibility is to use HTML-like tags to facilitate quote stamping inside messages. For instance if I wrote

"<q>XYZ</q> is going to the MOON -- Buy Buy Buy!!!!!",

the server could update my message after 15-20 minutes with an abbreviated quote such as

"XYZ:(Bid 0.125, Ask 3.50, 11/19/99 3:53 EST) is going to the MOON -- Buy Buy Buy!!!!!". During the evenings, the server could use the closing prices.

This strategy would have no use in real time, but would be useful in evaluating historical posts.

John,

1) How would the quote be presented? It is difficult to have real-time quotes
displayed to anyone due to exchange regulations. In fact, any quote less than 15-20
minutes old would be considered real-time. Assuming the quote stamp was a
delayed quote, would we display the most recent delayed quote at the time of the
posted message, or wait 20 minutes before posting the delayed quote? If we have
to wait to post the quote, is it still useful?

OK, since I am not a daytrader, is there a way to add to a post, after the normal trading day is over? (I say normal, because we have after hours trading, and you have to draw a line somewhere)

I post: Buy or cry, kiddies, T will never be lower.

The box at the bottom of my post, after the end of the day, states: Todays trading range on T was $46 3/4 to $48 3/8.

It simply will be a way to hold someone accountable.

Do you agree?

Phil

Hi John,

1) At the end of the post. Why don't you use a check box at the bottom of a the reply form, like you use for "Preview" and "Use Fixed Font". Serious posters could select it to validate their "prediction". People would begin to ignore "buy buy buy" without a quote posted.

2) Make it a single line, using a format not allowed otherwise in messages, to confirm "valid quote".

3) Possibly volume? That should be all that is required.

Ira

John, I suggested price-stamping messages somewhere within the first 200 messages of the Beta thread near the beginning of the summer. I don't see why the real-time/delayed issue is such a stumbling block. You don't finalize a posting for 15 minutes after it's submitted. When you do finalize the posting, throw on a 15-minute delayed quote. It will reflect the 'real-time'quote at the time the post was initially submitted. If you have to have a 20-minute delay, why not lengthen the Edit window to 20 minutes? There have been lots of requests to lengthen that time anyway.

like the idea of a quote stamp on messages.

high, low, close, change (%)
on the day the message was posted to SI

I read many posts days or weeks after they were posted
and it's disorienting to have the price quotes displayed
being out of synch with the prices at the time of posting
and the message's content.

Closing price of the previous day would be good enough for me. That would give discussions just a few days old more context.
