Nadine, it has in fact happened at the end of the 17th and 18th century as well. the former marked the beginning of a bear market in the Netherlands, the first country boasting a stock exchange, the latter marked a beginning bear market in Britain. at the end of the 19th century it was the U.S.'s turn, and i believe it was actually a global bear.

all these bear markets were of devastating extent...in the 45%+ range.
