Interesting NTSB recommendation.

I found this link on the ULBI thread on Yahoo earlier this week. It points out the inherent safety hazards with Lithium-cobalt batteries in pressurized canisters.

ntsb.gov

The question is whether the NTSB should stop at prohibiting pressurized Li-ion batteries as cargo on passenger planes. Probably the NTSB will review the inherent safety hazard associated with passengers carrying batteries like these in the passenger compartments. That could get interesting.

Of course, all lithium-cobalt batteries pose an explosive hazard as well as a fire hazard. The batteries will explode when operated outside of a narrow operating window. This is why they are outfitted with a number of safety devices in an attempt to mitigate the inherent danger.

Valence's non-pressurized lithium-manganese batteries have superior safety characteristics to both lithium-cobalt pressurized batteries, and to lithium-cobalt polymer batteries. I wonder what alternative batteries OEMs will turn to, when NTSB even considers the safety hazards of allowing electronic devices with the pressurized cells on board. "Who dey gonna call?" <ggg>

I suspect the forty OEMs currently testing Valence cells will hit the phones quick. And the major subject won't be pricing, it will be cell availability. OEMs will want to lock up a very limited supply quickly.

All this is just my opinion, and speculation.
