If Ericsson is having trouble developing Edge for GSM and TDMA networks, it may be forced to use Qualcomm's CDMA technology, said Mark Roberts, analyst with First Union Securities.

Not mentioned in this article is my belief that Ericy announced EDGE (even though they new it was not a viable answer) in order to sell more GSM equipment and phones.

It's like the proverbial dangling carrot, "Yes, it makes good sense to keep expanding your GSM or TDMA network because we have this carrot, oops, I mean we are working on EDGE which is a super-duper upgrade for data that will make your network more powerful so don't be shy about dumping more money into your obsolete network because we will fix it. EDGE will give you super data capacity, internet surfing, and it will be here just in time, late 2000-early 2001."

Now that they are suing Q (again) I hope nobody minds if I call them Er-icky (again)?

BTW, how can they claim the price was wrong? Didn't they sign on the dotted line? I suppose they will claim misrepresentation. Something along the lines of "You told us your infrastructure employees were looking forward to working with us but half of them left." Boo-hoo! I wonder why.

This makes no sense: "If you see U.S. TDMA carriers move away from Edge toward Qualcomm's technology, it would certainly be in Ericsson's best interest to renegotiate the infrastructure sale in relation to what they pay in royalties on CDMA."

If Ericy can't make Edge work, it only means it made a better deal in getting the Qcom infra division because they will make it up in Qcom 1x and hdr. If they didn't buy the infra division, Ericy would be in the tank--first the handset division goes blah blah and now it's infra division has nothing to sell towards 3G. Gimme a break guys. Qcom saved your bacon!
