AT&T/TCI made an agreement with TV Guide to use their program guide for 10 years. This was a natural partnership since News Corp and AT&T/TCI (through Liberty) own TV Guide. Since GMST has an agreement to merge TV Guide into GMST, the 10-year agreement will be merged into GMST. AT&T/TCI and News Corp will each own 19% of GMST. If AT&T/TCI/@home is developing an online guide to accompany their interactive TV initiative, I'm betting GMST is doing the development for them.

Eenie,

From what I've heard AT&T/TCI/@home is developing an online guide to accompany their interactive TV initiative...not sure an online TV guide is that big of a deal...

The fact that they are developing the guide tells me it is a big deal. That's consistent with the industry-wide expectation that every next-generation set-top box will have a guide. The point is that, with all the choices of features that might be included in a next-generation box, it's assumed that a guide will be in all of them.

What you might be missing, and I'm not being critical in that phraseology, is that it's one thing to develop a program guide. It's quite another to develop one without using Gemstar's patented technology. The maze of names is daunting for everyone except Stew. Just because a particular company is developing a guide, don't assume it won't inure to Gemstar's benefit.
