charred, I am not sure. I just included it as part of a complete explanation.
Some hard rock is very brittle and grinds easily, some is tough and fails to shatter and takes a lot of energy to grind. It all depdns on what is interspersed with the silica to reinforce it. This means a grinding test...no big deal, they are always done on some samples as part of the economic aaessment. Old weathered rock that is porous and all sulphides are long oxidised is best for heap leach as it crushes easily and the leach liquid(called a liquor....never drink it....it will be the last thing you ever drink) can penetrate and get all the gold from even the larger lumps.
