VISX says FDA approves laser for nearsightedness

NEW YORK, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Refractive laser technology company VISX Inc. VISX said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved its laser system for the treatment of nearsightedness and astigmatism.

The VISX STAR S2 Excimer Laser System can be used for up to 14 diopters of myopia, or nearsightedness, with up to 5 diopters of astigmatism, the company said.

Shares in the Santa Clara, Calif.-based VISX closed 4-1/4 points lower on Friday, at 79-1/16. The FDA approval was announced after the markets closed.
