Malaysia plans $525m shipping hub in Tamil Nadu

GIVING a leg-up to the Indian efforts to develop a strong port infrastructure, Malaysia has decided to commission a techno-economic feasibility report to develop a $525m (approx. Malaysian $2bn) mega-transhipment hub in Tamil Nadu.

Samy Vellu, the Malaysian minister of works told The Economic Times that his government had sanctioned a little over $1m to carry out the study. The report will focus on transforming Kolachal, a minor port in Tamil Nadu into a regional multi-purpose cargo hub with special emphasis on container handling. The study, which will be undertaken by Malaysian consultants, will also look into the infrastructure framework essential to connect this minor port to key commercial points like Madurai, Trichy within Tamil Nadu, and other neighbouring states. Incidentally, the state government has also accorded its go-ahead to the feasibility study.....
