mike, your welcome. i'm not nearly as technically orientated as most on this thread but i can do the grunt work.
re:<<When you determine the start of the tornado, how do you factor in the set-top boxes that are being sold daily by the cable companies and will be available on a competitive basis in the retail stores in July?>>

i would have to say that i would equate this with my tv observations. untill people start to realize it is something they want, they will not buy it, whether it is a set-top box or the tv. how will they know they want it??
when it becomes more common place. when they walk into an electronics store and every other tv has it. or when they are at a friend's or relative's house that has it. they will see it, become aware of it,be knowledgeable of it and then go and buy it. either in set-top box or tv. until the brand awareness is created the hyper growth in sales won't start.
i saw it at a friends house and now want it. i will not replace my existing tv but as you say i will buy a set-top box when available. i think the surge in set-top box sales will coincide with a surge in guide equipped tv sales.

as far as needing the consumer and the salesman aware of the technology. you are wrong now but you will be very right, hopefully very soon. with only aprox. 10% of tv's with guide, we need the consumer to be aware and the salesmen to sell. when it becomes more entrenched say 60 to 90%. then their awareness becomes a moot point. since the technology will be sold basically by default. that's why i picked 50% as the beginning.
