Blowing things out of proportion again I see.

I have no idea what Bill is talking about customers.

David:

Thanks for the reminder and URL to your latest MSFT column. I am in total agreement. We'll ignore (isn't technology great) the peanut gallery.

I ran a little seminar for my local Citibanker a month back on how small businesses could prepare for Y2K. I had a really good plan, simple, direct, no more than a few hours of on-line work. I wasn't really surprised when very few people showed up. After all, if Bill Gates isn't concerned, why should anyone else be? Most American small businesses will have done nothing prior to 01/01/00.

On your Microsoft point, one of the first conversations I had on Y2K was with an old friend who is an incredible Microsoft source. This was in the spring of 1998. I quipped that Y2K might be able to do more damage to Microsoft than the Department of Justice. (historical note: not so far.) He smiled wanly and nodded. Then told me that Microsoft was very, very worried about lawsuits and bad press over Y2K. They thought that they would be the 'poster child' for all PC problems, even though they sold very few of the application programs.

So someone at Microsoft agrees with you. :)

Christine

<<I believe that the building resentment against Microsoft's abusive
tactics and undisputed monopoly powers will take an additional swing
into negative territory come the new year, when core PC applications
start going flakey.

It certainly doesn't make sense to hold the tool builder responsible for
the fact that your house collapsed, but the tool builder -- Microsoft in this
instance -- has set themselves up for a mighty fall by turning a largely
deaf ear to desktop Y2K risks.>>

Thanks, David <ggg> we can add that I'm not totally convinced that my server's NT4.0 network or the Win95 OS on my workstations, are going to cooperate either. But I'll wait for the patches until January. Either the whole WinTel house of cards will collapse and it won't matter, or I'll back date and download them after Jan 3. Since you wrote that piece on Windows 2000, we have learned that it will be introduced next year. HE (Billy G) too probably wants to be assured that it will work.

Heard a mediator was assigned. Perhaps he wants to settle reeaalll fast, before the business masses rise up and do him bodily harm in January. I don't think they can do it in 40 days!

{David,

Been awhile. Something to think about:

November 19th was the last day of our odd lives.
11/19/1999 contains all odd digits. This wont happen
again until 01/01/3111.

David}
