Bux, same thing applies to W-CDMA. Ericy will not succeed, even with Qualcomm technology, in making W-CDMA work without warble and other defects. The more it diverges from cdma2000, the less likely it will be to ever see the light of day.

That could be, but you must agree, it will be a lot easier to use CDMA to make a commercially successful product than TDMA (EDGE). I am sure Ericky can make a workable version of CDMA2000 that is incompatible with it. As we all know, Qualcomm would still recieve customary royalties and reserves the right to compete in the ASIC market for any competing standard. Question is, will anyone want it? That is assuming they go ahead with an incompatible standard.

I think the recent Ericky aggression will turn out to be a net positive for Qualcomm since it is certain to cause Ericky to lose even more respect and influence (assuming they have any left). There is also the possibility that this latest announcement is just Erickies way of renegotiating a better royalty deal with Q in exchange for not creating a competing standard. Of course given the difficulty they are likely to face if they actually try to market a competing standard, I don't think they would have much leverage here but it may be in Q's best interest to make some small concession just to get the ball rolling.

Of course, rumor has it that Q is "difficult to negotiate with" but anyone with half a brain knows that just means they are brilliant negotiators.

Maurice, remember (ercy) Lars famous quote in Fortune Magazine a couple of years ago.."if customers request cdma we will deny that request". Their w-cdma and edge strategy will cost them big time. Lars will have to leave ercy again in order to escape future blame. thanks
