A service economy is a little like a circle of people each scratching the back of the next line. The circle consumes materials and energy, but it creates no useful output. The world's output into the US, but what goes out?

I keep having this dream of Asimov's Foundation Trilogy with Greenspan as the Mule. I wake up when the last piece of asphalt is put in place.
