receiving scratches in the right place by the right person is what the "economy" is all about

What counts in the big picture is creating value. If we do nothing but provide services to one another no one has *made* anything.

However we are fortunately not fully a service economy. I feel it quite profound that Intel and Microsoft replace Goodyear and Sears in the Dow.

There will always be old dying industries that are left for the rest of the world to produce. This is fine as long as there are new industries to replace them. Our new industry is the creation and application of technology (not the manufacturing of it).

The service aspect comes when applying new technologies. This is exactly what @home does, help cable companies apply a new technology.

(Don't ever accuse me of being off topic, I'll squeeze in a reference to ATHM somehow!)
