I don't think the hard drive will be on the MB. It's too mechanical, too separate from the MB in form and function.

Hey, Carl, There will emerge a standard mobo with most all functions on board. firewire(FW) ports and USB ports are all the ports needed and so the hard drive can be a FW connection. I doubt it will ever be planted on the board as it will vary so much in size that there will be as many different mobos as there are HD sizes and makers, therefore no HD on mobo....just a FW connection and apace for a variable amount of memory. Very few will ever be changed in any other way then RAM and HD changes. Like the common unix x terminals which have gone that way to a tiny box. So a tiny bos with an external line cord power supply blcok and you can make it the same size as an old style 5.25" drive in shape factor. You can get some of those things now for embedded applications, all in one tiny mobos.
The only problem is people think they need 5+ slots for adding stuff. Right now few systems add to the board as most OEM systems have 100baseT and video and USB on board.
Whenever makers try to sell a system with liuttle additive potentail they end up niched as power systems need expansion slots...unused one, for the most part.
