Oh I loved that post, loved it loved it loved it.
I used to own apartments: (the government helped me lose them with my own tax money) the local transportation department bought up homes for a future freeway then rented them out at $250 below market!!!!!
Anyway I had several people on welfare in my apartments (I did NOT take section 8 but they were able to afford the rent anyway). Here are some examples of how they lived: One family ALWAYS got take in food. One day for the heck of it I showed them how much cheaper it would be to COOK (what a concept). The wife said, simply "its easier to get pizza delivered". That particular family inherited $14000 and spent it immediately on a new car so they wouldnt have "income" they'd have to pay back to the welfare department!
Another quit her job because it was easier to be on welfare and not go out every day to work.
Another had a working man, supporting his family, when suddenly, zap he was in jail and they had to be evicted. I asked about the circumstances...seemed like a nice family to me. It turned out this poor guy was in a second marriage, could not afford the huge "child support" (it really is ex wife or ex husband support too, you know) awarded to his ex and kids, and so he was jailed. Guess what happened? The second family had to go on welfare too!
Our system stinks. Family problems are for families to work out, or churches, or Salvation army, etc, not for the government.

people hire credentials rather than skills
Unfortunate, isn't it?

Running for office? Need a brain like yours in our govt.

re hire credentials rather than skills

I strongly dislike "credentials" and "licensing"...what right has the govt to tell me whether I can work at something or not, or who I can and cannot hire or who I can or cannot serve: if customers like my work that should be enough.

A friend of mine was one of the most wonderful physical therapists at the hospital where she interned...they loved her work and praised her highly, as did the patients.Alas she could not pass the "credentials test" as she is not so great on tests, and so she cannot be a physical therapist, except on a very casual, informal basis.
There are plenty of stories like that...and the reverse where someone is terrible at what he/she does but passed the credential test. A counselor I knew when I lived in Australia said he was a better counselor on gut instinct before he took the courses required, which promptly killed a lot of his excellent instincts.
