Prophet,

You stated...

Also, if they receive no royalties, what gives SNDK any tactical or business advantage in the flash market going forward, and why should we not consider them just another commodity producer?

I have struggled with this for as long as I have owned SNDK.

The simple answer is that SanDisk holds many key (basic) flash memory patents and has received a significant amount of royalty income as a result.

SanDisk has not been able to capitalize on CF card assembly patents.
There are no guarantees they will ever garner royalty income from CF.
These will need to be negotiated on an individual basis.

SanDisk has the ability (I refrain from saying "unique ability") to combine their extensive intellectual properties and experience in semiconductor engineering/fabrication to produce the latest, most advanced flash memory product. If it continues to execute its plan successfully it will be a leader in low-cost/high functionality flash memory.

The market for flash memory will be there to gobble up whatever can be produced. Hopefully most items reaching consumers hands will either have a SanDisk logo or SanDisk technology inside.
