when the option expires worthless, you have a short-term capital gain. the gain is recognized as of the expiration date (not at the time when you received the proceeds for the sale of the option).

If the covered call you sell is not exercised, what is it?

Ordinary Income: STCG.
One final note: If you have Losses which are about to become l/t, consider take the loss now to while it is still s/t.
