Intel Completes $1.6 Billion Purchase of DSP Communications

Santa Clara, California, Nov. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp.,
the world's largest computer-chip maker, said it completed its
$1.6 billion cash purchase of DSP Communications Inc., adding
chips that connect wireless phones to the Internet.

Intel agreed last month to pay $36 a share for DSP, its
second-largest acquisition and its biggest all-cash transaction.

Intel is moving into new markets as the company's
traditional personal-computer processor business slows. The
purchase is part of its strategy to expand in networking and
communications and market its products for the Internet.

DSP Communications makes digital-signal processors that
convert sound, light and other signals into a digital computer
language that can be understood by other chips instantly. The
process lets cell phones and other wireless devices communicate.

Analysts estimate that within a few years, more people will
surf the Web through wireless devices like cellular phones than
through PCs. In 2003, almost 450 million cell phones and hand-
held computers will be shipped, most of which will offer Internet
access, according to market-researcher Dataquest.
