you are correct, this is speculation and I doubt that the person I spoke with had any real information, but was probably repeating rumor.

But I disagree on the notion that Rosen was over-active in operational issues - I think just the opposite, that if anything he was excessively concerned with avoiding such interference.

Issues such as the purchase or divestiture of businesses are not, in my mind, operational decisions and are properly part of the responsibility of the board, unless they are so small as to be inconsequential to the overall business.

I also agree that the high level strategy was not only in place under EP, but was well articulated. But the programs to put that strategy into practice were never put into place. Neither were the cost cutting measures, build to order, changes to the distribution model, consolidation of product lines, or definition of CPQ's mission and goals ever addressed effectively under EP, despite several years of talk. That, in my mind, was the real failing of EP, and if he or his team had delivered those programs in 1997 or 1998, we would not have seen the decline we have enjoyed over the last 18 months.
