Vitesse Enhances V-PHY 2.5 Family Physical Layer ICs With Integrated OC-48 3.3V Muxes and DeMuxes

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 22, 1999--

High Integration for SONET/SDH OC-48 Telecom

and DWDM Transmission Systems

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq:VTSS) today introduced the newest members to its V-PHY 2.5(TM) family of integrated circuits (ICs) for SONET/SDH OC-48 transmission systems.

The VSC8131 is a 32:1 multiplexer with integrated clock generator; the VSC8132 is the companion 1:32 demux IC; and the VSC8166 is a 1:16 demux with integrated clock recovery functions. All of these 2.5Gb/s ICs operate at 3.3V and meet Bellcore's jitter performance requirements.

These high-performing solutions offer design engineers of SONET and SDH Transmission Systems, Optical Networking Equipment, DWDM, ATM Networking and Digital Cross Connect Systems reduced power, board space, cost and development time for 2.5Gb/s applications.

VSC8131 and VSC8132 Mux/DeMux Chipset

The VSC8131 and VSC8132 chipset provides 32-bit OC-48/STM-16 Multiplexer/Demultiplexer functions. Additionally, the VSC8131 Multiplexer has an integrated clock generator with an internal Phase Locked Loop (PLL) that provides a 2.5GHz clock output from a low-speed reference clock for optical transmission equipment.

The companion VSC8132 Demultiplexer deserializes a 2.5Gb/s datastream into a 32-bit wide 78Mb/s parallel output. It includes circuitry for frame detect synchronization to the output data frame and also has alarm indicators for Loss of Clock or Loss of Data conditions.

"Vitesse continues to provide superior 2.5Gb/s physical layer products for telecom equipment manufacturers. Releasing the VSC8131/32 Mux/Demux chipset clearly demonstrates our leadership in this market by providing highly integrated and low-power solutions for 2.5Gb/s applications," said Mike Furlong, Vitesse product marketing manager.

VSC8166 DeMux with CRU

The VSC8166 Demultiplexer provides deserialization of a single 2.5Gb/s input into 16-bit 155Mb/s parallel output datastreams. The integrated Clock Recovery Unit (CRU) of the VSC8166 maintains reference clock outputs in the absence of data and minimizes board space requirements and component count for telecom system designers.

This 3.3V device also incorporates a Loss of Signal (LOS) input to enhance interoperation with companion optical modules.

"The low power of the VSC8166 clearly provides a better physical layer solution for system designers," added Furlong. "It vastly improves their channel performance with the integrated clock recovery functions, and more importantly it simplifies the design-in so that customers can achieve their time-to-market goals."

Each of these 3.3V ICs is packaged in low-cost 128-pin PQFPs, with production quantities available now. In quantities of 1,000, the VSC8131 is priced at $147, the VSC8132 is priced at $105 and the VSC8166 is priced at $131.

Vitesse Semiconductor is a world leader in the design, development and manufacturing of high-bandwidth communications and Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) integrated circuits (ICs). The company's products address the needs of telecommunications, data- communications and ATE equipment manufacturers that demand a combination of high speed, high complexity and low power dissipation.

Vitesse has headquarters in Camarillo, with manufacturing performed at its two fabrication facilities, in Camarillo and Colorado Springs, Colo. Company/product information can be found on the Web at www.vitesse.com.

The Lucent all optical router is a major breakthrough. Any ideas on the impact on VTSS? I have read that such devices will reduce chips in high performance devices.
