India, Russia to develop smart weapons

Washington, November 21 (PTI)

INDIA AND Russia will for the first time start joint development of smart weapon systems to enable New Delhi meet requirements in the next millennium, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov has said.

The Minister, quoted by 'Defence News' weekly today, said the protocol signed between the two countries recently in New Delhi should enable India to meet its current military requirements through purchases, co-production and technology transfer. The protocol laid the groundwork for potential defence contracts worth $ 15 billion between 2000 and 2010, Russian diplomats told the weekly.

It covers transfer of Russia's Kiev-class Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier to India and enables New Delhi to buy a-50 airborne early warning radar system and TU-22m-3 backfire long-range bombers at the end of their leases under a buy-or-lease arrangement.

The protocol also provides for procurement of six units of S-300V air defence systems, two Amur class submarines, three Khrivak class frigates, club-class naval missiles, air defence missiles and T-90 tanks by India.
