Companies which do more than 10% of revenue as barter have to report it in SEC filings. I think Salon, ivillage, and VERT have all fallen into that category sometime in the last year. Feel free to prove me wrong w/quotes from SEC filings, but I doubt the total is anywhere near 50% of inet ad revenue--even if you add in cash ad sales to friendly or affiliated companies, which is harder to track down.

In any event, the companies which recognize barter as revenue (which I agree is an idiotic practice) record an offsetting expense.

It doesn't take much to impress wall street.
Don't forget mutual funds are playing with other peoples money.

So its the publics money they will lose.They have already banked ther underwriting fees.

Here's an interesting feature that I didn't quite realize Amazon.com was offering in their auction postings:

When you post an auction at Amazon.com, they offer you the opportunity to choose items (maybe nine or so) they have for sale in their retail section and set up your auction so that when people bring up one of those items, your auction is featured on that page. They call this CrossLinking, and I infer from what they say that they eventually (some day) will want to charge for this "feature".

Here are the auctions I posted on behalf of my mother this evening; she's an artist in SF (two of the auctions are for inexpensive reproductions of art by her parents):

I tried to choose reasonable keywords for the CrossLink option (they call it a "Free Introductory Offer" when you are posting the auction), but they really didn't bring up many retail item listings. I think you have to actually hunt through their retail and choose the ASIN and/or ISBN codes for the items you want for the cross-link.

So Amazon.com is definitely working to leverage their database and deliver customers as much relevant information as possible. How effective they'll be is another question, but it's certainly not a bad direction to be heading. Of course many wonder if they can afford their own future.
