BJP ridicules Basu for the 'uncivilised and barbaric' remark

Pioneer News Service\New Delhi

The BJP on Sunday took strong exception to West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu's remarks that he still considered the party "uncivilised and barbaric". The BJP dismissed his views as the "rantings" of a man whose dreams to become Prime Minister had been "shattered".

Party general secretary Venkaiah Naidu in a statement here said that by passing these remarks, Mr Basu has "heaped abuse not only on us, but also on millions of people who have voted for the BJP".

"It is an assault on the democratic aspirations of the people, including the people of West Bengal where Marxists, for a change, are on the run," he said, and added, "The Marxists' contempt for the democratic process and the people's verdict has been reinforced by (the comments of) Jyoti Basu".

Terming Mr Basu's tirade as the ranting of a man suffering from a serious attack of sour grapes syndrome, Mr Naidu said "after all, Basu wanted to be the Prime Minister, but his party, the CPI(M) chose to offer its service as the palanquin bearers of the Congress."

"Today with his dream shattered, he can only hurl abuses and seek solace in vituperation. All the more so because the CPI(M) is no longer considered worthy of even ridicule," he said.
