KT Powertel forges partnership with Motorola

Motorola has assumed a 20 percent stake in Korea Telecom (KT) Powertel, the
TRS (trunk radio system) operator said yesterday.

In addition to investing 13 billion won in the TRS arm of the state-run telecom
company KT, the communication equipment manufacturer will provide technical
and marketing support.

The partnership with Motorola will boost KT Powertel's iDEN (integrated digital
enhanced network) service launched in Seoul and Pusan in January 1998, said
Hong Yong-pio, executive director of the network division at KT Powertel.

iDEN, developed by Motorola, integrates dispatch radio, telephone interconnect,
short message service and data communication into a single handheld unit.

KT Powertel will extend the digital service network to provide nationwide
coverage starting next June, Hong added.

Korea Telecom, which had an 83.2 percent interest in the TRS subsidiary last
June, now has a 39.6 percent interest following two separate new stock issuances.
As part of KT's privatization plan, the telecom company's stake in KT Powertel will
be brought down to 34 percent next year.

Talks are underway with several other TRS operators for additional investments
and a final contract could be in place by next March, said Hong.

With 65,000 subscribers as of the end of October, KT Powertel enjoys a 90
percent market share, according to Hong. The company's sales projection for this
year stands at 10 billion won, an increase of four billion won from last year.
