Wind River and AudeSi Collaborate to Accelerate Delivery of Java-Based Internet Appliances; New Technology Integration Offers Reduced Complexity, Time-to-Market Business Wire - November 22, 1999 08:28 ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 22, 1999--AudeSi Technologies, Inc. and Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND) today announced that Wind River software will now be available on AudeSi hardware and that the two companies have cooperated to create an integrated Java(tm) technology-based solution based on their respective hardware and software technologies for developing Internet appliances.
The goal of the new collaboration is to reduce the complexity of embedded application development and associated time-to-market delays for developers in this competitive market. Wind River is a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age. AudeSi is a leading provider of Java technology-based software for Internet-enabled appliances and applications development.
The Wind River-AudeSi option comprises of AudeSi's fully-integrated Touchstone Internet appliance reference hardware board and Alchemy Application platform layer with Wind River's VxWorks(R) real-time operating system (RTOS) and Personal JWorks(tm) Java technology-based Internet appliance platform. In addition, Wind River's powerful Tornado(tm) development environment and AudeSi's Alchemy tools for developing Java-based Internet appliance applications give developers the most comprehensive toolset available today for building Internet appliances.
"Vendors need to be able to offer customers everything the developer needs to hit the ground running and focus on his or her own value add," said Curt Schacker, vice president of marketing at Wind River Systems. "With the short product life cycles in the Internet appliance world, it is not enough to just provide good technology. Wind River understands this fundamental business concept and is committed to providing the additional value -- including pre-integrated components, a wide array of partners, professional services, and so on -- that our customers need to build an information appliance and get it to market quickly. Our partnership with AudeSi is part of that strategy and enriches and expands our Java technology-based embedded solutions to help Internet appliance developers jump-start the design process."
"Our technologies are complementary," said Brian McKinney, president of AudeSi. "Putting them together provides a completely integrated software solution that manages the inner workings of Internet-enabled appliances. Developers of screen phones, web tablets, kiosks, and other information appliances are now free to focus on developing applications that will run on our software layer, and that target their specific market opportunity. As a bonus, the new integration makes product development schedules far more predictable, accelerating time-to-market."
To leverage the ease of development and faster time-to-market possible with Java technology, Internet appliance developers need a completely-integrated software stack that will drive a consumer device and run applications. With the collaboration of Wind River and AudeSi, developers will have that option.
Developers can further benefit from this collaboration by leveraging Wind River's Personal JWorks development kits, which include Espial's Kalos(tm) Architect Java technology-based embedded rapid application development tools and Internet Application Suite. In addition, Wind River's WindLink(tm) partners offer a variety of technologies and services that support Wind River products as part of the industry's largest partner program.
"The maturity of Wind River's technology, including its integrated Tornado tool chain, is a great foundation for AudeSi's technology," said Steve Maryka, vice president of R & D at AudeSi. "By adding an additional software abstraction, AudeSi enables the developer to design at the application level, and not have to worry about things like device driver integration, making it possible to get an Internet-enabled appliance to market in less than a year."
Internet Appliance Development Cycle
Until recently the design of Internet connected information appliances has been "homegrown," with each appliance manufacturer inventing Internet access each time they develop either a new appliance or wish to port an application to a different platform. But the complexity and time required to start from scratch each time a new appliance or application is developed exacts a high overhead in time as well as cost. AudeSi's technology and its feature-rich embedded application development environment, combined with Wind River's comprehensive PersonalJava on VxWorks implementation, delivers an enormous time-to-market advantage.
