A TALE of TWO STORIES

Ballard Power

Once an unknown company with small market capitalization.

Methanex

Once a well known company with very large market capitalization

This was 7 years ago and what a difference now. Ballard has a zillion dollars capitalization and Methanex does not even rank. I have owned both companies over the time and made much money on Ballard Power. But everyone is forgetting something very important.

If Ballard is worth $20 billion, then it is because everyone thinks their fuel cells will take off. Now the fuel of choice will be methanol. If they start to sell these fuel cells like hot cakes (which they will have to to justify Ballard's market capitalization), there will become a severe shortage of methanol. Especially with todays low prices which will cause many high cost plants to close down permanently.

I know Methanex will be able to sell methanol and make money supplying fuel to fuel cells. However, I am still not sure Ballard can make money selling fuel cells. They will have to have a low price to compete with that old fashion internal combustion engine.

Just some thought to ponder, if of course you are an investor with a longer term approach. Otherwise, GO BALLARD GO.
