OT

As another free guy (signed up for SI in the salad days of 97 when it was free, then was grandfathered in when they switched to the fee-based system), I find that alarming. I would also be curious to know what happened to Mark.

To all:
Here is Mark's account of what happened to him over the weekend:

<<Thank you for all the kind words about my posts.

I have been on SI since 1996. When they became fee based I was grandfathered. I did not have to pay fees. Saturday morning when I was trying to post my weekly pricing report, my URL transferred me to a signup application that said I needed to pay $60 if I wanted to post. I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye.

I enjoy reading posts from the many knowledgeable SI friends and the $60 is not much of a factor. However, many good people have left and the frequency of good posts is dwindling. As far as I knew, others were also getting the same treatment as I and may also be leaving. I plan to hang on and watch for a while to see what is happening. I do not want to pay for SI if you great posters leave.

I like the Yahoo SEG thread. Like many of you, I have been wathching both theads because their are also knowledgeable posts here. All disk drive stocks seem to be in the same boat and move in unison. The spam has not been that bothersom and very few posters waste our time with personal attacts on others. I will continue to follow both threads as long as I enjoy the posts. Even if I rejoin SI in the future.

Regards,
Mark >>

I find this a little disturbing. If they want to collect an annual fee for the privilege of posting, that is one thing. But if they are selectively taking previously grandfathered posters and trying to get them to pay, that is another. Would I--or anyone else--pay an annual fee to post when I have Yahoo and any number of other free boards to post on? I don't know the answer to that one right now, I'd have to think about it, it obviously depends on the quality of the other posters and the feedback that would be available. But in the meantime, we should probably write to Brad or someone who is in charge of what is going on here and complain. What happened to Mark isn't right.

sorry this was so wordy, don't have the time right now to think through this post. more later.

Test of Mark's Theory:

I am also a free member grandfathered in.

If this post goes through, the idea that free members are not allowed to post anymore is not true.
