LIFTOFF! The sixth Soyuz rocket to carry Globalstar satellites into orbit has launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome.

1619 GMT (1119 EST)

The umbilical arm connecting to the rocket is now swinging away from Soyuz. There is less than a minute left in the countdown.

1615 GMT (1115 EST)

The countdown is now inside of five minutes to launch.

Today's launch will be the first from Baikonur since the Kazakh government issued a ban on rocket flights from the site following the Oct. 27 failure of a Proton booster. The halt in launches was lifted last week for all rockets except for Protons. During the Proton accident, debris from the rocket fell on a Kazakh town. The ban was the second this year. The first one followed a Proton failure on July 5.
