The Granville Market Letter

NOVEMBER 4 ~ On the stock substitutions which were put into effect on November 1: I think this was an obvious move on the part of The Wall Street Journal editors to keep the market up, and here is great historical precedent that later on the effort will backfire. On July 18, 1930, no fewer than seven Dow Industrial stocks were replaced, which proved to be a flagrant case of stock distribution which failed. The March 1997 substitutions took place in a bull market and occurred in a stock accumulation phase. These substitutions are seen to be taking place in a bear market.
