National Discount Brokers/NDB.com Partners With Aether Systems to Provide Wireless Stock Trading
NDB to Offer Customers Secure Wireless Trading, Financial Markets Information Mobile E-mail and Web Access via Palm Devices and WAP-based Smart Phones
NEW YORK, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Taking online trading to the next level, National Discount Brokers/NDB.com, a leading Internet and financial services company and subsidiary of National Discount Brokers Group, Inc. (NYSE: NDB - news) announced today that the Company has chosen Aether Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: AETH - news) to provide its customers with a complete stock trading, e-mail and Web access service over multiple wireless handheld devices. The upcoming service will offer NDB's customers a way to trade stocks, check their accounts and receive real-time quotes and market information.
NDB customers also will be able to use the service to send and receive e-mail and access Web content provided by OmniSky Corp., the nation's first wireless Internet service provider. Aether is a joint principal owner of OmniSky along with 3Com Corp. NDB plans to roll out the service over multiple devices, beginning with the Palm III, IIIx and V handheld organizers and, as well as smart phones using the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), and eventually including Windows CE devices and other wireless handheld platforms as they emerge.

The service will allow users to:
Trade equities, mutual funds and options Get real-time market quotes Review account balances, holdings, orders and activities Get alerts on breaking market or stock activity Program up to six e-mail addresses on a single Palm device Access dozens of Internet sites that use the Palm Web Clipping platform, which optimizes Web content for viewing on small wireless devices. NDB is planning two levels of service. The first service offering will allow customers to receive unlimited wireless access to stock trading and real-time quotes, financial market information, e-mail and Web browsing. NDB also will provide a lower-priced offering allowing customers to trade, get e-mail and access the Web using WAP-enabled smart phones and other devices. NDB will handle customer support for all trading, while Aether will provide the technical support to end users through its customer service center.
The service, which NDB plans to make available to its customers during the first quarter of 2000, will operate using fast, secure wireless data network links-made possible through Aether's Intelligent Messaging (AIM) software platform and network operations center in Owings Mills, Md. Aether also will provide all engineering development, hosting and technical support for the service.
The agreement with NDB marks the first time Aether will integrate the new wireless Web and e-mail services of Omnisky with its own customized wireless data services.
The announcement also makes NDB the first customer to use Aether's newly announced WAP Enterprise Center, part of Aether's expanded network operations center that offers enterprises a full menu of WAP development, hosting, security and customer support services.
