>>Regardless, all the Nittany Lions, who finished in a fourth-place tie
with Minnesota in the Big Ten standings, can do now is wait to see which
bowl offers them a bid. Their best-case scenario is the Outback Bowl in
Tampa, Fla., which gets the third pick of Big Ten teams after the Rose
Bowl and the Citrus Bowl.

Whether they return to Tampa for the third time in five years depends
first on whether Michigan gets an at-large bid to the Bowl Championship
Series. If so -- and it is likely that the Big Ten, widely hailed as the
best conference in college football, would get a team into the BCS
besides conference champion Wisconsin's automatic Rose Bowl bid --
Michigan State would go to the Citrus Bowl.

That leaves the Outback Bowl to decide whether it wants the Nittany
Lions, a traditional power who played there last year and whose fans
haven't traveled very well to Tampa,
or the Golden Gophers, whose fans
would be so excited to go to a bowl after so many years but whose
athletic department is in shambles after the athletic director was fired
last week.<<
