To me it's more ethnic violence than anything else. Class here depends on ethnicity, if you are from the right ethnic heritage you're going to have social advantages that the wrong ones don't have. Religion is a major part of the ethnic difference between the Anglo-Irish and the Catholic Irish, but it's not the only difference.

Edit: I should point out that my husband is half Scots-Irish (Calvinist) and half German (Lutheran).
