A gem of a stock: Gemstar Int'l (GMST)

Another way to play the interactive TV market (aside from IATV) is with GMST. They have proprietary technology protected by numerous patents which simplifies and enhances consumer interactions with virtually any electronic product. They patented the VCR Plus+ technology that will soon be a part of any high-end TV and created the interactive program guide for TV. The stock is on a slow, steady monster run (a la JDSU) and has gone from $72 on Oct. 21 to 109 1/8 at today's close. Stock was briefly derailed when they bought out TV Guide for $8 billion; however, astute investors realized that this: (1) freed them from the major lawsuit which had kept a lid on the stock's appreciation, and (2) gives them a near-monopoly on the programming and interface with multi-channel and interactive TV. The story is not dissimilar to the legal battle Qualcomm had with Ericsson; only difference is that the Street has been slower to realize the implications of the settlement with TV Guide.
