Trinity puts faith in Internet consumers

To keep pace with a booming consumer electronic commerce market, Trinity Ventures has raised $300 million for a new venture fund. Despite recent hype surrounding business-to-business e-commerce, partners at the Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm believe the online consumer market is wide open.

"People say the dot-com space is overcrowded, but how many real online brands are there?" asks Trinity general partner Tod Francis. "There's room for hundreds more."

Mr. Francis believes that while there are plenty of e-commerce companies peddling books and drugs to consumers, there are still many opportunities to build brands around specialty goods. "We're still in the first innings of a long ball game," he says.
